Travilla’s World

My last post was about a fashion designer so I decided to post about a famous costume designer.

William Travilla.

Many don’t know him BUT everyone knows his designs from the 40’s and 50’s. He was a prominent Hollywood costume designer who’s resume includes Adventure of Don Juan (1948), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), Gentlemen Prefer Blonds (1953) and the iconic white dress in The Seven Year Itch (1955). He designed many more films through out his career but he is most known for his designs for Marilyn Monroe’s movies. Below are copies of some of those renderings.

You can see his masterful skill in rendering. I love the way he uses his medium of painting (watercolor painting of renderings are most commonly used). The detail is exquisite and shocking when you think that it is all done by hand. I think he is the standard that all costume designers strive for.

Get inspired!
